There’s a My Chemical Romance Reference in The Amazing Spider-Man

There's a My Chemical Romance reference in Marc Webb's 2012 movie The Amazing Spider-Man and everyone missed it… until now.

Webb directed MCR's video for "Helena" and has also helmed the camera for videos by Green Day and Evanescence. His filmography includes 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man series. He's directed an episode of The Office, too.

It's Webb's work on "Helena" that is referenced in The Amazing Spider-Man, something recently picked up on by Screen Rant. During the scene depicting the funeral of George Stacey, viewers see what is essentially a shot-for-shot remake of the scene in the "Helena" video where the mourners carry the coffin out of the church amidst a sea of umbrellas.

Check out stills of the two scenes below:

The similarities in the two shoots have been acknowledged by Webb in the commentary for The Amazing Spider-Man. Revealing that both scenes were shot in the same location — Immanuel Presbyterian Church in California. Webb also joked about a fondness for umbrellas, which perhaps explains why they feature so prominently in both his Spider-Man film and the MCR video.

In other My Chemical Romance news, the band recently revealed the rescheduled dates for their U.S. reunion tour. You can see the dates in full below.

Watch ‘Deadpool”s Ryan Reynolds Crash An ‘X-Men’ Cast Reunion

href=”//screencrush.com/author/claireepting/” rel=”author” title=”Claire Epting”>Claire EptingMarvel

As a part of Global Citizen's Global Goal: Unite for Our Future fundraising event this past weekend, Hugh Jackman led a virtual reunion for the cast of X-Men. Featured guests included Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen.

Everything goes well for a brief moment, before the conversation is hijacked by an unwelcome visitor: Ryan Reynolds, a.k.a. Deadpool. Soon, it becomes a competition of who can leave the chat soonest. Watch the full clip below:

We all know Deadpool knows how to crash a party. While you could technically consider him as a part of the X-Men franchise, he's never fought alongside the rest of the gang onscreen. That doesn't stop him from inserting himself into the reunion, even though he doesn't have much to contribute.

And yep, things get awkward pretty fast. One by one, each cast member leaves in favor of a different reunion — Sophie Turner's got a Game of Thrones reunion, James McAvoy is on his way to a Split reunion, and so on. Eventually, it's just Jackman and Reynolds… until they're joined by Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth). Schreiber observes that the call has become an X-Men Origins: Wolverine reunion. He's not wrong.

Obviously, Reynolds' appearance was premeditated. But that doesn't stop the clip from being organically funny. We wouldn't be surprised if Reynolds came up with the idea to participate in the Zoom call himself.

Musical Adaptation of NBC’s ‘Smash’ Is Headed For Broadway

href=”//screencrush.com/author/claireepting/” rel=”author” title=”Claire Epting”>Claire EptingNBCUniversal Television

The cast of the NBC series Smash reunited yesterday via live stream in partnership with People and the Actors Fund, seven years after the show had its finale. The event featured 15 of the show’s original cast members in a virtual reunion, including its stars Megan Hilty and Katherine McPhee. It also showed a never-before-seen sold out live concert performance of the series’ show-within-the-show, the Marilyn Monroe biographical musical Bombshell. Now, according to TVLine, Smash is finally getting its shot on Broadway.

The project was initially announced way back in 2015, but the premise was a different one. The creators of the series were originally going to mount Bombshell on the Great White Way as its own standalone show. Now, it’s looking like Smash the musical will instead focus on the characters of Ivy (played by Hilty in the series) and Karen (played by McPhee in the series) who duke it out for the role of Marilyn Monroe. Smash’s songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will return to write the music, which will feature many of the songs they wrote for the series. The show will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Neil Meron, who served as executive producers on Smash. Said Spielberg in a statement:

‘I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway,’ Spielberg said in a statement. ‘Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the Smash journey with me over 10 years ago.’

There’s no solid timeline for the musical adaptation of Smash. After all, Broadway is closed indefinitely, which would make any predictions for the show’s debut difficult. Still, it’s exciting to know that we’ll be getting another dose of Smash in the future.

‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon Suggests Movie Is In The Works

href=”//screencrush.com/author/claireepting/” rel=”author” title=”Claire Epting”>Claire EptingNBC

Dan Harmon’s Community has been through the ringer, from cancellations to network shifts to showrunner changes. But throughout it all, it has persisted in its own wacky, format-breaking way. Originally airing on NBC in 2009, the comedy about the ragtag group of community college students ran for five seasons before being scooped up by Yahoo for a final season. Since then, it’s developed a cult following. On April 1, the show found a new home on Netflix, leading to a resurgence of its popularity. So could this mean a long-rumored Community movie might actually happen? In an interview with TheWrap, Harmon said:

I can tell people for sure that the enthusiasm for Community both for all of this time and the resurgence of it [on Netflix], there’s always an aspect of that affects the marketplace. And when the marketplace gets affected, conversations happen. And when conversations happen, things happen. I mean, when you’re part of the Community family, you learn never to raise expectations, keep ’em nice and low and then be pleasantly surprised. So I can say that there are conversations happening that people would want to be happening and that I’m very, very excited about the coming months.

In November of 2019, the cast of Community sounded their support for a movie adaptation of the beloved show, but it was Harmon who had minor reservations. But it seems like he's warming up to the idea. Community was instrumental in advancing the careers of Donald Glover, Gillian Jacobs, and Joel McHale, so a movie starring these actors would certainly draw a lot of buzz.

Until we get the official news of a Community feature film, we can look forward to a Community table read reunion on Sony Pictures TV’s YouTube channel on Monday, May 18 at 2PM PT.

‘Friends’ Starts Streaming Again on May 27

href=”//screencrush.com/author/screencrushstaff/” rel=”author” title=”ScreenCrush Staff”>ScreenCrush StaffWarner Bros.

Even though its final new episode aired in 2004, Friends remains one of the most valuable television shows on the planet. In 2018, Netflix paid a reported $100 million for the rights to stream the show for a single year. But those rights expired at the end of 2019. When the calendar ticked over to 2020, Friends left Netflix. And it hasn’t popped up anywhere else yet. If you don’t have the DVDs (or a TV that gets syndicated reruns), you might be going through Friends withdrawals after three-plus months without the show available on demand.

That changes on May 27. That’s when Friends’ new streaming home, HBO Max, officially launches to the public. The new site, owned by WarnerMedia, will be the “exclusive” streaming home for Friends for the next five years. (They paid a reported $425 million for those rights.)

HBO Max’s original plan called for the series to debut with a brand new unscripted reunion special featuring the six main Friends cast members. Unfortunately, the shooting of the special was delayed because of coronavirus. (HBO Max’s announcement of its launch slate now lists the special among the original programming due on the service “through summer and fall” of 2020.) But in the meantime you will be able to watch all 236 older episode of Friends on HBO Max, starting at the end of May. (You can read the full list of HBO Max’s launch titles right here.)
